It is our nature, at the birth of our children, to immerse ourselves into this important time of falling in love. For generations, families welcoming the birth of a new child, were nurtured, supported and cared for during the early months. Parents and child were given time to ‘get to know’ one another as the daily functions were taken over by others. Family and community naturally offered help, advise, parenting wisdom and encouragement. Even now, rituals and traditions around birth continue in many cultures. The greatest emotional and physical demands associated with having a child occur following the birth. This is when most of the conventional support systems in this society typically disappear. Often the extended family is unavailable and the new parents are left to fend for themselves. A
postpartum doula is a woman experienced in mothering, who provides physical and
emotional support to new parents. A doula understands the physiology
of birth and the emotional needs of new parents. This includes encouraging
the new parents with an objective, informed and caring perspective. I can be reached at 503-516-9075 or by email. Sliding scale fees are available upon request.
